My new gig in Steamboat Springs

On June 11, I became the new publisher of the Steamboat Pilot & Today.

The photo that accompanies that story on my hiring was taken at the Yampa River, which runs through downtown Steamboat Springs.The Pilot & Today is a media company in Steamboat Springs, Colo. with a portfolio that includes a daily newspaper, a half-dozen magazines, a website and mobile app, events and a TV channel.

The company serves a vibrant resort community whose downtown is at 6,700 feet in the Rocky Mountains. The Pilot & Today is owned by Swift Communications, a regional family-owned media company that specializes in mountain resort markets with operations in Steamboat, Vail, Aspen, Park City, Lake Tahoe among others.

10 Newspapers That Do It Right

I'm proud to have been a part of the yearlong "Focus on Homeless" initiative that prompted Editor & Publisher magazine to name The Register-Guard one of its "10 Newspapers That Do It Right" for 2018. 

I'm not big on awards, but I do appreciate the intent of E&P's annual list, which promotes creative work pursuing lasting change, not simply celebrations of great individual work that may lack long-term impact. 

The Focus on Homelessness was borne out of discussions I had with community leaders, businesspeople and readers upon my arrival as publisher of the R-G in July 2016. Each of those groups were overwhelmed by the problem and expressed feelings of "mission fatigue" in trying and failing -- and trying and failing -- to cure to a widespread problem entrenched in a giving community.

Facebook Live

Early on in the press run at The Register-GuardI did a Facebook Live video during a Thanksgiving Eve visit to our pressroom to visit employees on the busiest night of our year -- the Thanksgiving Day paper had nearly 700 pages of news and advertising. 

My goal was to show the pressroom and packaging and assembly department in full motion, to demystify a little bit of what we do to print and distribute a newspaper each day. We call the newspaper "the daily miracle" for good reason, and seeing and hearing the newspaper come to life from digits to hard ink and paper never gets old. 

This was my first Facebook Live video, so there were some technical things I learned that I won't repeat next time, but all in all I thought the end result gave people a taste of the hard work many people do to print a top-quality newspaper and get it distributed each day.
