Photographer John Isom said Foyt “blew his engine on the second lap of his allotted three-lap qualification” run. “Unbelievably, he managed to install a new engine in time to qualify for the race!” (Photo courtesy of John Isom)

Joe Leonard had success as a motorcycle racer before transitioning to Indy Cars. (He won the A.M.A. Grand National Motorcycle Championship in 1954,1956 and 1957!) This photo of Leonard was taken at Hanford Motor Speedway on Nov. 3, 1968. (Photo courtesy of John Isom)

The No. 40 STP car is trailered in a plexiglass cover. This is the revolutionary turbine that ran at Indy in 1967, driven by Parnelli Jones, that shocked the racing world to its core when it led the race for 171 laps and broke down on the 197th lap when a $6 gearbox part failed. It now resides in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. The photograph of this famous Granatelli race car was taken at Hanford Motor Speedway on Oct. 22, 1967. Granatelli, obviously intensely proud of his accomplishment in building this amazing car, trailered it in a special transparent cover to Hanford for display. (Photo courtesy of John Isom)
