Celebrating a good life
Posted on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 11:34 PM
It's been nearly a week since my dad passed away peacefully at age 88. I actually drafted something to post here but didn't because I figured he wouldn't have wanted the attention. I never heard him brag and he did little to draw attention to himself. But he had a fanbase.
The formal Fresno Bee obit offers a quick overview of Dad's life, and is a good place to share your thoughts and memories. There also are various threads on Facebook and a lot of great comments in The Fresno Beehive in response to a post from Bee editorial page editor Jim Boren.

Logan -- Thanks for the notice about your father. Dayle Molen was my advisor in the Fresno State J-Department during the early 1980s (same time you were there), and he was always someone I could go to when I needed guidance. I still keep original copies of some of my class assignments edited by Mr. Molen and looking back, of course, he was right on the mark. I kept in touch with Mr. Molen after I left the J-Department and both before and after I relocated to Japan. Like any J-Department anywhere, Fresno State had its factionalism and favoritism among both faculty members and students, but I always considered Mr. Molen as being above all of the pettiness and being the real captain of the J-Department ship during its golden years. Thank you for everything, Mr. Molen, and may the journey be a good one.

Brian, great to hear from you. And thanks for the kind words.
You'll be interested to know that I just saw a photo of you a few days ago. We had my Dad's memorial service on Saturday and my mom brought some snapshots she had uncovered while digging through files. This particular photo was of Dad, you and your wife sometime after you graduated.
He thought the world of you, and we all envied your decision to move overseas. I hope all is well.
If you send me your email address, I'll send you a copy of the photo.
